The Unfinished Gift

It's time for The Friday 56 @ http://fredasvoice.blogspot.com/

Rules:
*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56.
*Find any sentence that grabs you.

p.56: "The entire crew looked to him for stability. But these men were more than just gunners under his command; they'd trained together for months, had flown every mission together, so far without a single mishap."

This is the latest selection for the Lit Wits, we'll meet next Tuesday to discuss it. It takes place at Christmas time in 1943, the story of a family that has been torn apart. Just a couple of days before Christmas a lonely and seemingly crabby widower finds his 7 year old grandson (whom he had never met) at his door. Ian hasn't spoken to Patrick's father (his son) in many years. Patrick is a loving and exceptional boy but his grandpa doesn't see it. The boy's mother died in an auto accident and has no relatives, her husband's father is the only living relative. Patrick only needs to stay a couple of days until his dad (a pilot during the war) is found and comes home. But it's not as easy as it sounds. It's an easy read, only 249 pages and I highly recommend it. The Unfinished Gift is a heartwarming story for Christmas time or any time.
